A shoulder injury has dealt a significant blow to the Toronto Blue Jays' 2025 season, with outfielder Anthony Santander facing an extended period on the sidelines. This news comes as a major setback for the team and Santander himself, who had high hopes for the upcoming campaign.
Manager John Schneider announced the unfortunate news during spring training, revealing that Santander will undergo labrum surgery on his left shoulder, with an expected recovery time of five to six months.
Santander's journey with the Blue Jays has been a rollercoaster. After signing a lucrative five-year, $92.5 million contract during the last offseason, he struggled to find his form, playing only 54 games due to various injuries. His 44 homers and 102 RBIs with Baltimore in 2024 had raised expectations, but his Toronto debut fell short of those lofty standards.
"We tried everything to avoid this," Schneider said, reflecting on Santander's recent setbacks. "He was ramping up his hitting in January, but unfortunately, things didn't go as planned."
And it's not just Santander who's facing a lengthy recovery. Right-hander Shane Bieber, the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner, is also dealing with forearm fatigue and won't be ready for the start of the season. Bieber, who joined the Blue Jays last year after rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, made a strong impact during the postseason, helping the team reach the brink of a World Series championship.
"We're taking a cautious approach with Bieber," Schneider explained. "Given his recent surgery and the demands of the postseason, we want to ensure he's fully recovered and can make a significant contribution this season."
In addition to these setbacks, right-hander Bowden Francis will also miss the entire season after undergoing UCL reconstruction surgery.
These injuries have undoubtedly left a mark on the Blue Jays' roster, but the team remains optimistic about their chances. With a mix of veteran leadership and young talent, they'll look to overcome these challenges and make a strong showing in the upcoming season.
