Consistency or Bust: Cubs' Michael Busch Sets His Sights on a Steady 2026

Chicago Cubs first baseman Michael Busch is no stranger to success. Over the past two seasons, he's been a reliable force at the plate, capping off a breakout year in 2025 with 21 home runs. But 2024 was his true coming-out party, where he smashed 34 homers and drove in 90 RBIs, leading a potent Cubs offense. But here's where it gets interesting: despite these impressive numbers, Busch isn't resting on his laurels. He's laser-focused on one thing: consistency.
"It's about finding ways to improve," Busch reflects. "When you put in the work and see the results, it's incredibly satisfying. That's what drives us. Even during tough stretches, there's always room for growth. It's not always easy to see in the moment, but looking back, some of my biggest struggles led to my most significant growth – as a hitter, a defender, and an all-around player."
Busch understands that true consistency means performing against any pitcher, regardless of handedness or pitch type. He's been working diligently to refine his approach, aiming to find that "extra groove" that elevates his game to the next level.
"Whether it's a righty, lefty, fastball, or off-speed, I'm striving for that consistency," he explains. "I want to be a threat every time I step up to the plate."
The 2025 season was a thrilling ride for Busch and the Cubs, marked by their first postseason appearance since 2020. While they ultimately fell short of their World Series aspirations, the experience left a lasting impression. And this is the part most people miss: the taste of playoff baseball has only fueled Busch's hunger for more.
"Experiencing Wrigley Field during the playoffs was incredible," Busch recalls. "It's a feeling unlike any other. We fell short, but it was a step forward. It's made us hungrier, more determined to get back there and go even further."
With the Cubs' sights set on another World Series run, the team's vibe is electric. Busch, entering his third full season with the team, is impressed by the work ethic and camaraderie within the clubhouse.
"This is a special group," he says. "We've got veteran leadership and young talent, all pushing each other to be better. The energy is high, and I truly believe we have what it takes to do something special this year."
