A Grand Rapids educator has reached the semifinal stage in the Minnesota Teacher of the Year competition.
Jinnea Zenzen is among 30 semifinalists, chosen from an initial pool of 128 candidates.
According to the Grand Rapids school district site, Zenzen teaches social studies and also serves as an advisor to both the student council and the Renaissance Club.
No other teachers from the Northland area appear on the semifinal list.
In March, a panel will reevaluate the semifinalists’ portfolios alongside their video submissions, and from that review, 10 finalists will be named. The current Minnesota Teacher of the Year, Linda Wallenberg, will announce the successor at the Minnesota Teacher of the Year banquet on May 3 in St. Paul.
Education Minnesota, the teachers’ union, organizes the awards program.
