NASCAR: Corey Day's Reputation & Aggressive Driving Style | Freddie Kraft's Advice (2026)

A sharp warning is sounding over Corey Day’s early NASCAR season: he’s earning a reputation for aggressive moves that echoes Carson Hocevar’s, and it’s attracting scrutiny. In just the first two races of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Day has found himself in several wrecks.

Atlanta lived up to that warning in five laps. Day moved three-wide, triggering contact that knocked out multiple competitors and drew the ire of drivers like Ryan Sieg after being spun into the wall on lap 5. This week, Freddie Kraft, a long-time NASCAR spotter and host of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, didn’t sugarcoat his feedback for Day.

“The biggest challenge for him is going to be hard work,” Kraft said. “He’s earning the same kind of reputation as Carson Hocevar—reckless. And you’ve got to flip that script quickly.”

Day’s willingness to initiate contact, whether through deliberate aggression or misjudged spacing, has become a recognizable pattern early in his full-time NOAPS run. That kind of reputation can be risky down the road.

Kraft noted that a driver’s standing on the track can influence how others race against him. “He’s got a lot of support behind him,” Kraft added. “No one’s going to drop him next week for making mistakes. But if this behavior keeps up, you’ll be raced differently. He needs to reverse course and regain the respect of the drivers he’s competing with.”

Rookie frictions aren’t new to Day’s season. Last week, Sieg was furious after Day tried to force the issue on lap 5. There’s a time and place for aggression, and that line matters more when you’re building trust with fellow competitors.

Tommy Baldwin Jr., co-host of Door Bumper Clear, believes Day is still in an accelerated learning phase. “He just needs to slow down a bit,” Baldwin said. “He has fast cars, but he needs to be deliberate. Sprint car racing rewards early aggression, but NASCAR requires strategic patience—like optimizing pit stops to gain track position. Once Day grasps that broader approach, his talent should shine through.”
