The Packers have extended the contracts of General Manager Brian Gutekunst, Head Coach Matt LaFleur, and Executive Vice President/Director of Football Operations Russ Ball. President Ed Policy made the announcement on Friday, expressing his excitement and confidence in this trio of leaders.
"While the end of the season was disappointing, we're committed to our purpose and have been working hard to chart a new course," Policy said. "I have no doubt that Gutekunst, LaFleur, and Ball are the right people to lead us to another championship."
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, where some fans might raise an eyebrow. The Packers have had a remarkable run under this leadership, with six playoff appearances in the last seven years. That's tied with Kansas City and Philadelphia for the second-most postseason appearances in the NFL over that span. And Green Bay is one of just a few teams to make it to multiple conference championships from 2019 to 2025.
Gutekunst, who became the Packers' 10th general manager in 2018, has been with the team for 27 seasons. During this time, the Packers have ranked highly in playoff appearances and division titles, with six appearances in the NFC Championship Game and a Super Bowl win (XLV). Gutekunst's teams have also set records for youth and success, with the 2023 and 2024 teams being the youngest playoff teams in the NFL from 1980 to 2024. He's acquired 21 players who have earned All-Pro honors or made the Pro Bowl, contributing to the team's success.
LaFleur, the 15th head coach in Green Bay's history, has led the Packers to 76 regular-season wins so far. That ties him with Paul Brown for the second-most wins by a head coach in their first seven NFL seasons. LaFleur's regular-season winning percentage is impressive, and under his guidance, the Packers have had four seasons with 11 or more wins. This is tied for the most in the NFC and ranks third in the NFL since 2019.
And this is the part most people miss: LaFleur has helped the Packers achieve top-10 rankings in various offensive categories, including total offense, scoring offense, and red-zone TD efficiency. The Packers are the only team in the league to finish in the top 10 in all six key offensive categories over that span.
Russ Ball, who has been with the Packers for 19 seasons, originally joined the team in 2008 as the vice president of football administration/player finance. During his time with Green Bay, the team has had an impressive record, with the most playoff appearances in the league, eight NFC North titles, and a Super Bowl victory (XLV). Ball has also worked with other NFL teams, including the New Orleans Saints, Washington, Minnesota, and Kansas City.
