The Fungal Canvas
At the heart of Funguy is a fascinating phenomenon: the photophobic nature of certain fungi. By utilizing a laser diode to trace outlines onto agar gel, the fungus grows up to the edge of these traced figures, forming complex patterns. This process, a form of 'printing' with living organisms, opens up a world of artistic possibilities.
Unraveling Fungal Growth
The project's origins lie in a research endeavor, where a computer model was developed to predict and control fungal growth. This model, a fusion of a temporal convolutional neural network and a cellular automaton, learns and simulates growth patterns. What's intriguing is the adaptability of the cellular automaton's rules, with each cell running a small neural network that learns under the guidance of the convolutional network. By training these networks on different fungal species, the model can accurately predict diverse growth patterns.
Controlling Growth with Precision
