Kian Schaffer-Baker, the star wide receiver for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, has signed a contract extension through 2027, securing his future with the team. Schaffer-Baker, a 27-year-old native of Mississauga, Ontario, had an impressive 2025 season, catching 15 passes for 177 yards in just five regular-season games. His performance continued to shine in the West Final, where he caught three passes for 56 yards and a touchdown, and in the Grey Cup, where he added three more catches for 27 yards. Standing at 6'4" and weighing 195 pounds, Schaffer-Baker was originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 CFL Draft from the University of Guelph. Since then, he has become a key player for the Roughriders, catching 220 passes for 2,865 yards and 14 touchdowns in 57 regular-season games. However, his future with the team was uncertain as he was a pending free agent. The Roughriders recently signed fellow Canadian receiver Samuel Emilus to a lucrative two-year contract extension, leading to speculation that Schaffer-Baker might also be let go. General manager Jeremy O'Day addressed these concerns, stating that while it would be challenging, it was still possible to keep both players within the 2026 CFL salary cap. The Roughriders had a successful 2025 season, finishing first in the West Division with a 12-6 record, their best performance since 2019. They went on to win the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, their first championship in 12 years, with quarterback Trevor Harris leading the way with 4,549 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. The team's strong performance on both offense and defense, coupled with a turnover differential of plus-eight, contributed to their success. The Roughriders also had a strong fan base, finishing second in attendance with an average crowd of 28,427, a 2.7% increase from the previous year.
