Yellowstone's Ground is Rising, But Should You Be Worried? Let's Dive In!
It's understandable why a growing bulge beneath Yellowstone National Park might spark concern, especially when it's described as being the size of Chicago! However, according to Mike Poland, the lead scientist at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, there's no immediate cause for alarm. Recent observations have detected a significant uplift on the northern edge of the Yellowstone Caldera, near the picturesque Gibbon Falls. But here's where it gets interesting: scientists are explaining that while this uplift is indeed substantial – comparable in area to Chicago – it's a completely harmless geological process. The leading theory suggests it's due to the natural accumulation and release of magma deep underground, at a considerable depth of nine miles. This isn't a new occurrence either; similar ground movements, known as uplifts, have been recorded in 1996, 2004, and 2020. In fact, scientists are quite excited about these events!

The ground in Yellowstone National Park has risen by about one inch (approximately 2.5 centimeters) over an area spanning roughly 19 miles (30 km) since July 2025. This upward bulge, located near Gibbon Falls, is being closely monitored by Mike Poland and his team. Poland himself has noted, “It’s an area more than 19 miles wide, give or take a few kilometers. Saying the elevation is the size of Chicago makes it sound incredibly grand, but I think it’s quite impressive even if not particularly unusual. That doesn’t mean the volcano is about to erupt. It’s Yellowstone being Yellowstone.”
Poland further clarified that the most probable cause is the accumulation and extraction of magma at a depth of nine miles. He emphasized that this is much deeper than where the park's hydrothermal systems typically operate, making magma a likely culprit. While magma movement is often associated with volcanic eruptions, Poland stresses that the possibility of an eruption stemming from this specific event is extremely remote.
And this is the part most people miss: Yellowstone is one of the most geologically active places on Earth, constantly shifting and changing. These surface movements, or deformation, have been observed before, specifically in 1996, 2004, and 2020. So, while the ground is moving, it's a familiar tune for geologists.

Poland highlighted this progress, stating, “It’s a measure of how advanced our monitoring networks have become, and their sensitivity in detecting these small changes. That’s the story of the year for me.” These technologies allow them to pinpoint exactly when an uplift began and track its progression.
Ultimately, what might have seemed like a dire warning of an imminent eruption has been demystified by science.
